BIAV Awareness

Awareness & Prevention

Each year, approximately 2.5 million people sustain a traumatic brain injury. TBIs account for over 2 million emergency department visits and as many as 50,000 deaths annually and traumatic brain injuries are a contributing factor in approximately 30% of injury related deaths. Despite these statistics, TBI is often misunderstood and misdiagnosed.

The Brain Injury Association of Virginia (BIAV) strives to increase the awareness of brain injury by:

  • Educating the public about the physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral consequences of brain injury.
  • Developing and distributing education and prevention resources to professionals, government leaders, schools, hospitals, coaches, athletic trainers, law enforcement, and others.
  • Talking to state and federal legislators.
